Friday night David met me in Virginia (later than expected, as usual with US Air...), and we crashed for the night. Saturday began our weekend o' fun with a day trip to Colonial Williamsburg! Other than the scortching heat and the pricey day passes, we loved experiencing life "as it was in our nation's yesterdays."
for you, GG!
After walking countless miles around Williamsburg (our favorite stop was the public hospital), we left to find a cool spot to sit and watch the US lose to Ghana in the World Cup... not a high point of the trip, but what can you do?
We actually left town that evening to make the drive to Maryland. We had no idea what to expect, and boy were we pleasantly surprised! Most of the drive was uneventful (which was a blessing), but when we got to a toll booth, we freaked out at the $12 toll! As soon as we passed through, we realized why it was so much...
We were driving over - and through - the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (and here). It is a four-lane 20-mile-long vehicular toll crossing of the lower Chesapeake Bay, interrupted by two approximately one-mile-long tunnels.
Holy moly.
Maybe it isn't really that big of a deal, but we were freaking out. We loved it so much. My sister would have been freaking out too, but not out of love... It was so beautiful to see nothing but ocean on either side of the car!
So, Saturday night we arrived in Salisbury, MD, ate some dinner (following our no-chain-restaurants-while-we're-out-of-town rule) and hit the hay!
Here is David with our rental for the week... the Versaaaaa baby.
Just a piece of advice- if you are car-shopping, don't bother to check out the Nissan Versa. Though it wouldn't be our car of choice to purchase, we did average almost 40 miles to the gallon!
