19 months

Crawford, at 19 months you...

  • are learning your letters and some numbers! You can identify A, B, C, D, F, L, O, Y, 2 and 5 - and you do alllll the time! If you see any of those letters on a tshirt or sign you point them out. Daddy works with you using the foam letters in the bathtub and I've printed out worksheets that we color on and talk about during the day.
  • try so hard to dribble a ball. It's adorable. You definitely have an athletic bent, which obviously came from your daddy :). You still dunk and shoot the basketball with crazy precision. You've even started attempting trick shots. You get on your knees or lay on your back and try to make baskets. True story.
  • basketball is your favorite thing ever. As soon as Daddy gets home you run to his car and drag him to get basketballs and make him start shooting them. He gets a good hour in every night of shooting baskets for you to watch.
  • can be so, so testy. You want to do things your way and you really don't like me messing with you. You are happiest doing your own thing by yourself. This obviously makes outings that require compliance (ie- toddler time at the library) not so much fun.
  • are very physical towards me. You bite me (ONLY me...) and hit me and kick me. Sometimes out of anger or frustration, but sometimes it seems like you just can't communicate your excitement or something... it's weird.
  • are getting spankings. We went through the Dr. Dobson Dare to Discipline study last year, and we are practicing what he teaches about spanking. So, you're getting spanked for things you know to be wrong. You do have a defiant little will about you so it's not an irregular occurrence. I made these spank sticks and we keep them everywhere (upstairs, downstairs, garage, car, diaper bag). You know what they are and what they are for, which is half of the purpose in my mind. You bit me the other day and then as soon as I picked you up you said "'panking?". Even though you're obviously still defiant, I can tell the discipline is working. We are praying these verses as we discipline you too. It is so hard and SO not fun, but we pray that we can instill a healthy respect for authority in you at an early age.

  • say most of your friends names (Max is your favorite, Anya is second).
  • stay occupied playing with cars for a while. You play with them in the window sill, on the bumper of the car, on the retaining wall outside, etc.
  • say "amen!" at the end of prayers. And, if we forget to pray (especially at breakfast and lunch...) you remind me by saying "amen!". You also say amen at random funny times, like when the lady at library story time finished reading her book.
  • love airplanes, your mower ("mow mow"), football and golf.
  • say your name "Cawfod"
  • try to do a forward roll which often leaves you in the downward dog position which is funny.=
  • have some adorable funny words you say "guc"= yogurt, "nas"= snack and funny things daddy has taught you to say: "nice", "aw nuts" and "oh no".
  • are obsessed with John Bryant.

It's completely crazy to think that this is likely your last monthly update before you become a big brother. I cannot wrap my mind around the changes we're going to experience in this next month, but I'm excited to watch you develop and grow as we add a new member to our family. Love you, buddy. You're my favorite one!

18 months - 1.5 years!

If it is even possible, I think the past six months went by quicker than the first 12. It is hard to believe that you are halfway through your second year of life!

Crawford, at 18 months you:
  • are a little pistol. If you don't get your way, you pitch a fit. This happens a lot during the day when you want a snack ("nack"), and you stand in front of the pantry trying to pry it open with your fingers. Other common causes of your tantrums are: me not giving you your lovey ("wuby") and/or binkie ("bb"), not letting you go outside, not letting you play with your balls/basketball goal when we're getting in the car and you see them, pretty much anything you want to do that I don't let you.
  • are very independent (see #1). You want to eat anything with a spoon all by yourself (and you're doing a great job with it!), you typically want to be wherever I am not (ie- I'm in the kitchen, you're in the living room; I'm in the play room, you're in the guest room...), and you try to put your shoes on by yourself (quite unsuccessfully).
  • think your new (to you) basketball goal is about the greatest thing ever. Even though you can't do ANYTHING with it...

  • are cutting your bottom incisors (teeth #13 and 14), and they literally are the worst ones so far. They are bothering you all day long, and it's so pitiful to watch!
  • can shoot the basketball into your hoop (we raised it a notch) very efficiently. Like, it freaks me out how good you are. You shoot from feet away - and often one handed (left hand) - and make it. Most of the time. It is amazing to me.
  • went on your first tube ride and jet ski ride at the lake, but weren't very thrilled by either one.
  • loved watching Daddy play soccer. Like, you wanted to be on the field with him most of the time. You would clap and yell gibberish at them, which was adorable. About half of the game was always spent in peace sitting together on the sidelines, while the other half was a battle of wills while you stole other people's balls, tried to run on the field and otherwise defied my every word.
  • like to do silly things like walk with your hands behind your back, your eyes closed or backwards.
  • love to hide - even if that just means covering your eyes, which I assume means you think we can't see you. It's adorable. You do that a lot when I'm disciplining you (less adorable).
  • say "ABC", point one finger when I ask how old you are (but say something that sounds like "two"), know lots of body parts and continue to amaze me with the things you learn every day.
-- LOTS of videos this month because I finally cleaned them off my phone :) --

Taking your picture this month was particularly impossible... Fortunately Becca took some amazing pics of you that we'll always treasure!

Crawford, at one year old you:
  • love playing with a puzzle (that Jessica gave you before you were born!).
  • roll trucks and cars across the ground.
  • turn on and off light switches.
  • say doggie (sounds like "augie") and bow wow wow (what a doggie says).
  • put things inside bowls and containers. You're actually really helpful in cleaning up, because you will put things away when I help you.
  • say bath a lot. Once you master saying a new word, you forget about it and move on. For example, you never say mama or dada anymore. You say bath and crawl into our bathroom and turn the water on about 12 times a day.
  • you love the bath. Specifically, you love playing with the water coming out of the faucet. After we turn it off, you stand up and make us nervous so we go quickly after that.
  • point the remote at the tv and push the buttons.
  • cross your little ankles when you eat or are sitting down playing.
  • are obsessed with eating bananas.
  • have a new growl noise you like to make.
  • walk with your push toy, but aren't close to actually walking. I think you have a few months to go still.
  • have had a runny nose for what seems like ever... and your drool is incessant. Still, no new teeth.
  • have two favorite books that we could read over and over and over again. You've loved these two (train book and thankful book... not sure what they are actually called) for months now without deviation. You do love to play with other books, but you won't sit still for us to read any to you except these two.
  • like for us to lift you up so you can put the ball in the basketball hoop.

This year has been the fastest and greatest of our lives, little boy! You have given us more joy than we thought possible. Having you has given us such a tiny glimpse of the way the Lord loves us, guides us and gives us grace for each new day. We praise HIM for the past 365 wonderful days of your sweet little life.
