playing at Samford

The morning after the baby shower, we stopped at Samford to burn some little boy energy and to just reminisce. It had literally been years since I had stepped foot on that gorgeous campus and I loved getting to take Crawford there to enjoy it. Kristen met us to walk around, and she totally surprised us by telling us her ENGAGEMENT story that took place after the shower the night before! And at Samford!  So we had a blast being excited about her wedding and chasing Crawford around our old stomping grounds.

Samford has new dorms that back RIGHT up to our old abode- the Currie Way house! Obviously, it isn't much to look at (this is the backside of the 6,000 sq ft house!), but it was crazy to be back to check it out.

Hanging outside the library like the good ol' days- except now we're pregnant/engaged!

Kris's gorgeous ring

He's ready to be a Samford boy! Just checking his mail...

Such a fun morning at one of my favorite places! And, Crawford slept nearly ALL of the 2.5 hour drive home. Hallelujah!

"What's your name?" "Mary Shelton" "Happy Birthday, Rachel!"

We spent the weekend in one of our favorite places- Birmingham- with some of our favorite people- Ashley & the Bryants!

Friday night was Step Sing. Though I am pretty obsessed with the whole thing, this year's performance was quite a disappointment. Independant Ladies were particularly ... bad, which was sad for me.
HayHay spent Friday night with us, and we love having her as our baby sis for family events like this.

The results were...
3rd Place- Phi Mu
2nd place- Pi Kappa Phi
(an awesome show!)
SWEEPSTAKES- Dudes-A-Plenty!
YAY for Independants rocking the Step Sing Sweepstakes (2005- DAP, 2006- IL, 2007- DAP, 2008- not really sure?, 2009- DAP got 2nd, 2010- DAP)!

In case you haven't watched this one yet, check out the best Step Sing show of all time:

And... while I'm posting random things about Step Sing, I thought I'd share this gem I found:

It's me and my friend, Lanie Beth at Step Sing... '06 maybe? We definitely haven't kept in touch, but I recently started reading her fabulous blog! She is just wonderful.

So, back to the weekend...Ashley has a new baby! Kensie Jo (Kensington= the part of London they lived in, Joyce= Jenn's mom who found her) is Harley's new best friend. They had so much fun together. Harley loves everyone, but the feeling isn't always mutual... This time, it was! He is still catching up on his rest from the hours of play time they had together.

I lost the picture of me and Kristen, Jamie and  Kara, but that's ok because I look like a whale in it. But man, it was so good to catch up with these friends. There is something irreplaceable about friends who know you so well. I am so looking forward to our next reunion weekend in April for Abby's wedding!

Saturday night we celebrated Mary Shelton's 20th birthday at the Cheesecake Factory (our favorite place)!
We had so much fun with all of the Bryants + friends.

...the beautiful birthday girl!!
The two hour wait made for a late night on the road Saturday, but it was totally worth it to spend the beautiful weekend in the 'ham.

What I do.

Disclaimer: If you are going the be turned off/offended by a "soap box" of sorts, feel free to find another blog to read :).

Last night was a fabulous event at Niko's Southside Grill for Samford alumni, parents and prospective Samford students. There were tons of high school kids and a good representative of the other two groups. We had 5 from the class of '07 representing! It was such a fun night for me in particular because many of my former Samford co-workers came up for the night to meet and mingle, and I loved catching up with everyone (missed you though, Sheri!!). We're headed to Samford in a few weekends for all kinds of Samford-fun, and I cannot wait to be there!

While listening to several of the Samford representatives share a little bit (Randy Pittman made me cry. and made me want to re-enroll in classes. and have a baby right now so I can send him/her to Samford in 18 years.), I thought a lot about my own story.

Randy shared about the Samford experience from a parent's perspective, and he told the parents about the worship service that happens at the beginning of each new year for all faculty and staff to pray for the students. Literally every name is said aloud and prayed for. I had goosebumps! The other thing he said that really resonated with me is that though we claim Samford as a "Christian school", but Jesus did not come to save schools. He came to save people. We cannot be a Christian school, but we can be (and are) a school made up of Christian people, who love the Lord and desire to glorify Him with their work.

All of these encouraging words left me feeling warm and fuzzy, but so what?

Let me back up... as a sophomore in college I started working at the Samford Phonathon. I needed a job, and it was on campus and paid well. Little did I know that I would be enamored by this concept of raising money for the school I so loved. So, after graduation I stayed at Samford for another year, managing the Phonathon and learning the ropes of Annual Giving.

When David and I got engaged, we knew Chattanooga would be home. I was sad to leave SU, but I knew the Lord had another plan for the next phase of my (our) life. I quickly (amazingly so!) got this fabulous job at UTC as the Director of Development for Annual Giving!

My role in the Development Office (Annual Giving) is impacted by the number of UTC alumni who give financially to the university on an annual basis. So here's where you come in. This is not a solicitation, but I want you to hear my heart. If you went to college anywhere, you benefitted from years and years of generous people who cared about your school and your educational opportunities. Many people think (or even say!) things like "I don't have/make a lot of money, so I can't give", "I'm still paying of school loans", "I couldn't give much, so my gift doesn't matter", “don’t even ask me for a gift… do you know what I make?” and on and on. I promise, I've probably heard most of them (yes, in just a few short years! excuses are pretty rampant in this business :) ). Get this: did you know that the alumni participation percentage (number of alumni who give back to the University at ANY level) is one of the factors in a school's national rankings (think: US News and World Report)? That means every single person has an opportunity to make a difference. And you know what else? You only have a college degree because other people made giving back a priority.

My boss once told me "Other than saving souls and saving lives, we are doing the next most important work." I couldn't believe her more. We are about the business of educating people (to save souls and lives, nonetheless). And I think all of us with a college degree would consider that a pretty important thing.

I would love it if you would consider making an annual gift to support UTC, Samford, UGA, Carson- Newman, IU or wherever you went to school. Again, the amount of the gift does not matter at all! We are all striving for participation, so every. single. gift. counts! When you get something in mail- look at it! At least consider making a gift. When a brave Phonathon/Telefund caller is on the other end of your phone- hear them out and give them $10! Yes, $10! When you get an e-mail from your alma mater, check it out! See what is going on, and see how you can be involved.

Samford vs. UTC

The Samford soccer team came to Chattanooga! The last game of the regular season and Samford won!

Cutest grandparent award!

The Hudson/Mosier/Bryant/Mosier crew. Love these folks.

Yay, MS! We are so proud of you!

who do I cheer for??

This weekend provided an interesting set of events. We reveled in a free night on Friday (after a full week and before a full weekend). Saturday morning we left for Birmingham! UTC played at Samford and we had planned a bus trip & tailgate. Everything went really well, and UTC won! People kept asking me who I was going to cheer for, and I had to reply "well, UTC pays the bills." I was surprisingly very excited about the Mocs! It's fun to be a part of the excitement of UTC sports right now. Yeah, I cheered at Samford (for one year), but come on... it's Samford. There's not much hype about going to football games. In fact, about the only Samford students at the game Saturday were the soccer players, and they sat on the UTC side (it was Family Weekend though, so the SU stands were full of parents)! David and I had field passes thanks to our athletics friends, and it was so fun to watch the game from the sidelines!

canine love

Every year at Samford University Cumberland School of Law, Rascal Day was something all Samford students looked forward to. Granted, we never knew what it was about (I always called it "bring-your-dog-to-law-school day")- in fact, I just learned- but it was a fun experience. My friend Ann Wade is Samford's official photographer and she posted these fun pictures today.

Dogs are always welcome at my office. If I hear the ladies oohing and ahhing downstairs I know it's either a dog or a baby. I brought Harley to meet everyone, and he was a wild animal (which is not a big surprise, I guess). Matt brings his dog, Buster for an occasional visit. Most recently, Ruth Holmberg (former publisher of the Chattanooga Times and donor to UTC, her grandfather owned the New York Times) brought her dog to a meeting in our office. That one was a little odd, but I'm glad to work in a dog friendly place!

paint me a Birmingham

What a great weekend! David and I both took Friday of last week off work so we could spend an entire weekend with Ashley in Birmingham. It was definitely a wise decision, and it felt like a vacation for us! We got to stay up late and sleep in (which we never do... we're so old and boring) and it was great! On the way there, we stopped at a real nice KFC for a quick dinner and quickly noticed that my biscuit had already been partially enjoyed by someone else...
... yeah, that's a bite taken out of my biscuit. Sick. They gave me a new one, but I was still a little disturbed.

In addition to hanging out with Ashley over the weekend, we also got to watch Mary Shelton play two soccer games as a Samford Bulldog. We are SOOO proud of her! She was a walk-on to the team and now she's starting every game and playing every minute. Friday night we beat Elon 2-0 and MS scored!! We were so, so excited! Here's the article about the game and the picture of MS from Samford's website:

I had lunch with Jamie on Saturday and did some shopping with Ashley and David (poor kid... he wanted to be watching football but instead was trapped at the mall. He was such a good sport though!). Then, Saturday night we made Sheri's lasagna recipe and Peter, MS, Lynn & John came over to watch the Georgia v. Alabama game. We had a great time- even though Peter was a disappointed GA fan.

Sunday was a great game, but we tied 0-0 with UNCG (the team picked to win the conference preseason) after double overtime. It was brutal, but we totally outplayed them and MS was awesome. Read more about the game here.

Overall, it was such a great weekend and we can't wait to go visit again!
